Visa advice

Do I need a visa?

When applying from outside the European Union you may need a visa to enable you to attend the Trinity CertTESOL Course in London. Please check the official UK government website

  • To see if you will need a visa.
  • For up to date information on visa requirements for visitors to the UK from your country.
  • To read about and understand the specific visa(s) you may need to apply for.
  • To see when you can start the application process, and to know how long it will take before you are granted a visa.

If you do need a visa, please ensure you have sufficient time to apply in advance of your course start date.

The Oxford International Teacher Training team will be able to give you an official letter to provide the consulate and answer questions regarding your stay. This will be on headed paper, bearing the name of our parent company, 'Oxford International Education Group'.

If you are in any doubt, please check the official UK government website, or contact an approved visa advisor (see below for some links).

Standard Visitor Visa?

Always check the official UK government website to see if you require a visa. Depending on the nationality shown on your passport/travel document, a Standard Visitor Visa may be all that you require.

  • You may find that a short training course like the Trinity Cert TESOL is a permitted activity under the rules for the Standard Visitor Visa, so long as it is not the main purpose of your visit here (i.e. you are intending to travel before/after completing the course), and so long as the study period is not greater than 30 days (this may be relevant if you are applying for a part-time Cert TESOL course - check with the centre when applying). There should be a link on the Standard Visitor Visa page which will give you more detail on permitted study activities whilst in the UK on a Standard Visitor Visa.
  • Check the UK government's immigration page on the Standard Visitor Visa for up to date information on the application process, requirements and permitted activities. Make sure you read through all the relevant links carefully.
  • You will only be allowed to stay in the UK on a Standard Visitor Visa for 6 months. If you plan to stay longer, you need to apply for a different visa.
  • Depending on the nationality shown on your passport/travel document, you may not need to apply for the Standard Visitor Visa, but you may be asked to provide the same documents as if you were. These documents are listed on the UK government's immigration page on the Standard Visitor Visa ('Documents you must provide').
  • If the Trinity Cert TESOL is the sole purpose, or main purpose of your visit, the Standard Visitor Visa may not be sufficient, and you may also need to apply for Short-tem Study Visa (in addition to your Standard Visitor Visa).

Remember, the starting point for all of your research should be the official UK government website page, to check if you need any visa(s) at all.

Short-term Study Visa?

Always check the official UK government website to see if you require a visa. Depending on the nationality shown on your passport/travel document, a Standard Visitor Visa andShort-term Study Visa may be all that you require.

  • If the Trinity Cert TESOL is your sole reason, or main reason for visiting the UK, or if the part-time Cert TESOL you want to apply for will take longer than 30 days of training to complete, you may need to apply for a Short-term Study Visa in addition to your Standard Visitor Visa.
  • Check the UK government's immigration page on the Short-term Study Visa for up to date information on the application process, requirements and permitted activities. Make sure you read through all the relevant links carefully.
  • Depending on the nationality shown on your passport/travel document, you may not need to apply for the Short-term Study Visa, but you may be asked to provide the same documents as if you were. These documents are listed on the UK government's immigration page on the Short-term Study Visa ('Documents you must provide').

Remember, the starting point for all of your research should be the official UK government website page, to check if you need any visa(s) at all.

Can I travel in Europe before or after the duration of my visa?

You may be allowed to travel before your course starts if you ask the consulate at the time of your visa application.

How can we help you?

Once the full fees for your course have been paid, the Oxford International Teacher Training team will be able to give you a letter of acceptance which you may need to provide to the UK consulate confirming fees paid, dates, course content, the resulting qualification, and an offer of a place. This is free of charge. This will be on headed paper, bearing the name of our parent company, 'Oxford International Education Group'.

Need more advice?

The UK government also provide a UK Visas and Immigration international enquiry service. If you haven't been able to find information which can help you, or you have a general enquiry about UK visa application processes. You can access this service here - https://www.gov.uk/contact-ukvi-outside-uk.

You may choose to pay for a consultation with a visa adviser regarding entering, studying and working in the UK. See below.

Can you recommend a visa adviser?

The UK government regulates immigration and visa advisers, so you know if an adviser is approved by the Office of Immigration and Services Commissioner (OISC), that advsier meets certain quality standards.

A list of approved OISC immigration/visa advisers can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/find-an-immigration-adviser

Finally...

Please make sure you know which Visa to apply for, what you need to do, and how long it will take you, before your interview for the Cert TESOL course.

What about the Dip TESOL?

All of the above has been written with the Cert TESOL course in mind, but we have many Dip TESOL trainees from outside the EU too! The same advice applies when you are thinking of applying for a visa for your 2-week onsite component (based in Greenwich). Depending on what you agree with your tutor, you will be training/in assessments with us for between 10-15 working days.

Testimonials

  • "Since completing the Cert TESOL course at Oxford International, I have been working hard. I have lots of classes and have actually already seen a return on the price I paid for the TESOL course so I am pretty happy. My students are fantastic which makes it very easy!"
    Alan Cunningham
    TESOL Dec 2016
  • "I had 4 great weeks on the CertTESOL course in London. It balanced learning the technicalities of language, analysing teaching methods and practising them. The tutors gave valuable insight from their own experience and space to create our own teaching style. Importantly, we did this in an atmosphere that was not only relaxed and comfortable, but encouraging and constructive."
    Olly Goodhall
    TESOL Apr 2011
  • "It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I learned more about grammar and phonology in a month than I did in 4 years of university in Australia! The most valuable element was the insight I received in engaging students of all abilities using a variety of strategies - skills I can use for the rest of my career."

  • "I really learned so much at Oxford International in Greenwich. The techniques seen, critiques heard and encouragement I received changed me. My lessons are less teacher focused and more student focused, and I realised I had to help my students take ownership of their learning."

I had a great experience being taught by the Greenwich tutors, who were all extremely supportive and worked exhaustively to ensure we all did the best we could. • "I am so pleased I chose to study the Cert TESOL at Oxford International. Our trainers were supportive, motivating and very knowledgeable. Their experience and enthusiasm alongside a well structured course made the whole process an enjoyable challenge. At the start of the course I wondered how on earth I would be prepared to teach by the end of the 13 weeks, but now I feel confident that I can go out into the teaching world and start my career. I would thoroughly recommend the course to others wishing to gain a TEFL qualification."
